The Shamisen can sprit into three pieces.

Those three pieces connected by groove (Hozo). Some very expensive Shamisen has gold in Hozo which can transmit the vibration through the neck more than without it.

Cover the head (Ebio) with a black cover. Red one covers over the black one for extra protection but its for at home so remove it before going up to a stage.

After jointed the neck, cover the body by Doukake. It guards the body from sweat from right arm and avoid slipping from your lap. Made of wood, paper and silk.

Neo. It anchor strings. Made of silk and cotton.

Doukake has two different length of cord. Longer oner holds around heel.  Tie them in a bow at both side of the body.

Put Neo which anchor strings.

The bridge or Koma.

As you can see three size of grooves. Big one (far left) is for Ichi-no-ito. The middle one is for Ni-no-ito and smallest one is for San-no-ito.

Rise three strings with your left hand when you slide bridge on the surface of the body because grooves could cut strings.

Put a bridge about two fingers away from Neo.

After each practice, wipe it very well with Tsuyabukin and put it into a paper bag and then a plastic bag.

Japanese paper can control moisture and the plastic bag can avoid humid.

Then put it into a bag.
